    Miami is the busiest cruise port in the world, hosting a myriad of ships year-round from all over the globe. Although it is technically not on the Caribbean Sea, no other American city exudes more of the diverse tropical appeal of the Caribbean. The city is home to a large and vibrant immigrant population that blends snowbird refugees from more northern climes with emigres from all Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as sizable groups from Europe, the Middle East and Asia. From the hot-blooded Art Deco haunts of South Beach to the natural wonders of the UNESCO-inscribed Everglades and the laid-back charms of the Keys, South Florida offers a bounty of appealing attractions that make an extended stay in the region nearly mandatory for those either embarking or disembarking here.

    Le Porto Rico a été volontairement associé aux États-Unis depuis qu’il a été cédé par l’Espagne en 1898. En 1952, ce pays insulaire est devenu un territoire des États-Unis et une république autonome. La capitale, San Juan, est une ville grouillante de plus de 1,5 millions d’habitants. Les vestiges de l’architecture coloniale se tiennent côte à côte avec les gratte-ciel les plus modernes dans le cette ville contrasté. La zone de 7 quartiers, qui contient la zone historique du Vieux San Juan, a été complètement encerclée par les murs de la ville et est toujours gardée par les forts impressionnants de El Morro et de San Cristobal, qui servent au port de rappel des siècles de domination espagnole. La forêt tropicale El Yunque, sur le côté nord de l’île, est l’une des nombreuses caractéristiques géographiques distinctives trouvées ici.     Il y a environ 40 îles Vierges britanniques (le nombre exact varie d’une autorité à l’autre), dont beaucoup sont inhabitées. Certains ne sont habitées que par une poignée de résidents. Jost Van Dyke a une petite population de ses familles propres: les Turner, Grants, Ringes et Callwoods pour n’en nommer que la majorité. Le désir de continuer à vivre dans les anciennes traditions est forte ici, et « Jost » ressemble beaucoup à ce qu’il devait avoir l’air il y a 100 ou 200 ans. Cet archipel est vierge et sans feu de signalisation. Si le temps le permet, votre capitaine jettera l’ancre à cet endroit idyllique et déploiera la Marina pour une journée de jeu dans la mer et au soleil.

    A classic golden arc of sugary sand at South Friar’s Bay, Carambola is home to the island’s most luxurious beach clubs and restaurants. Umbrellas, loungers and optional water sports abound for those so inclined. Otherwise St. Kitts has other attractions, including a number of lovingly preserved plantation great houses, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Brimstone Hill Fortress and a scenic narrow gauge sugarcane railway.

    The Caribbean’s verdant “Nature Island” has resolved not to succumb to the high-rise hotels and casino culture that predominate on some other islands. The tiny nation is determined to thrive on its natural resources, which are many and attractive. Water is one, and the island does export delicious mineral water throughout the area. There are also thermal springs and a “boiling lake,” as well as lovely waterfalls. Citrus fruits such as grapefruit are another export. The island is the source of Rose’s Lime Juice, a requisite of the perfect gimlet cocktail. Fragrant bay rum, distilled from native trees, is a handmade commodity much prized on the global market. Visit the peaceful Botanical Gardens, or ascend Morne Bruce for a stunning view over the town, the harbor and the sea beyond.

    Bequia’s Admiralty Bay is a favorite yachtsman’s anchorage. They ferry ashore to join the friendly, low-key locals “under the almond tree,” the chosen meeting place. Stroll along the Belmont Walkway to the Gingerbread for homemade nutmeg ice cream, or Frangipani, run by the daughter of a former prime minister. Continue to lovely, golden Princess Margaret Beach, or round the bend to Lower Bay. Don’t miss the excellent craftsmanship at the Sargeant Brothers Model Boat Shop, it’s a Bequia specialty.

    La Barbade a conservé de nombreux traits de son héritage colonial britannique. Les juges et les avocats portent des robes et perruques appropriées, la police porte des casques de même style et le bobbies et le cricket Londonien reste une passion nationale. La Barbade a aussi tout l’attrait sportif du reste des Caraïbes, avec des plages immaculées, une forte houle et des eaux cristallines. Les maisons aux couleurs vives et les fleurs d’hibiscus se mêlent aux arbres d’acajou et aux églises anglaises datant du 17ème siècle.
