Camarones est le chef-lieu du département de Florentino Ameghino qui est réputé pour sa richesse en caractéristiques géologiques et paléontologiques. Les gens sont attirés par la région par son long littoral intact et sa faune. Camarones signifie « crevettes » en espagnol. La ville était autrefois réputée pour l’abondance des crevettes dans sa baie.
