Southampton est une grande ville portuaire située sur la côte est de l’Angleterre et un port d’escale pour les croisières en Europe du Nord sur les navires MSC. Située dans le charmant compté du Hampshire, Southampton est une passerelle vers de nombreuses attractions historiques du sud de l’Angleterre.

Lerwick, le port où votre bateau de croisière MSC vous attend, est au cœur de la vie commerciale des Shetland. Tout au long de l’année, son port abrité est occupé par des ferries et des bateaux de pêche, ainsi que par des embarcations spécialisées, telles que des plates-formes pétrolières, des navires de prospection sismique et des navires de guerre provenant de toute la mer du Nord. En été, les quais s’animent avec les yachts, les paquebots de croisière, les navires historiques tels que le Swan restauré et les grands voiliers occasionnels. De là, des ruelles étroites, appelées « closses », s’élèvent vers l’ouest jusqu’à la nouvelle ville de la fin de l’époque victorienne. L’extrémité nord de Commercial Street est marquée par les murs imposants du Fort Charlotte, construit pour Charles II en 1665, incendié par la flotte hollandaise en août 1673, puis réparé et baptisé en l’honneur de la reine de George III dans les années 1780. Les expositions du Shetland Museum, qui se trouve dans un magnifique bâtiment construit spécialement pour le bord de mer, comprennent des répliques d’un magot d’argent picte découvert dans la région, la pierre des moines, dont on pense qu’elle témoigne de l’arrivée du christianisme dans les Shetland, et un bloc de beurre, paiement des impôts pour le roi de Norvège, retrouvé préservé dans une tourbière. Les croisières MSC Europe du Nord proposent également des excursions à Scalloway, autrefois capitale des Shetland, qui a toutefois perdu de son importance au cours du 18ème siècle avec l’expansion de Lerwick. De nos jours, Scalloway est plutôt calme, bien que son port soit assez actif. La ville est dominée par l’imposante coquille du château de Scalloway, une maison tour fortifiée classique construite en 1600 avec du travail forcé par le tristement célèbre comte Patrick Stewart, qui tenait sa cour dans le château et a acquis une réputation de cruauté et de corruption.

You can admire the centre of Ålesund from above by climbimg up the 418 steps that lead you to the panoramic heights of Mount Aksla with a view of the islands that surround the town and of the Sunnmøre Alps.

In alternative you can reach the Sukkertoppen, the “sugar peak”, by taking a walk that starts from Hessa, just above the port where your MSC cruise ship is anchored. To get a closer look at the traditional architecture you should instead go the island of Godøy, where you can visit Alnes, a picturesque fisherman’s village built very close to the beach where you find local crafts and food sold in the courtyards.

Book an excursion to the characteristic lighthouse from where you have a wonderful view of the ocean. You cannot claim to have visited Norway on an MSC cruise if you haven’t visited a fjord, so don’t miss an excursion to Geirangerfjord. Dropping from the tall mountains that surround it are wonderful waterfalls like the Brudesløret (the Bride’s Veil) and the De syv søstrene (Seven Sisters) or the Storseterfossen, behind which you can take a walk.

And if you like more challenging paths you could climb up the Ørnevegen (the Eagle’s Path), twisting up from sea level to 620 metres above in just 11 hairpin bends!

When you step ashore from your MSC cruise, the obvious start to an exploration of the city is the two principal squares: the Markt, overlooked by the mighty belfry, and the Burg, flanked by the city’s most impressive architectural ensemble. Almost within shouting distance are the three main museums, among which the Groeninge offers a wonderful sample of early Flemish art.
Another short hop brings you to St-Janshospitaal and the important paintings of the fifteenth-century artist Hans Memling, as well as Bruges’ most impressive churches, the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk and St-Salvatorskathedraal. Further afield, the gentle canals and maze-like cobbled streets of eastern Bruges – stretching out from Jan van Eyckplein – are extraordinarily pretty.
The most characteristic architectural feature is the crow-step gable, popular from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century and revived by the restorers of the 1880s, but there are also expansive Georgian-style mansions and humble, homely cottages.
Time and again the eye is surprised by the sober and subtle variety of the cityscape, featuring everything from intimate arched doorways and bendy tiled roofs to wonky chimneys and a bevy of discreet shrines and miniature statues.
