The MS Ortelius was built in 1989 as a special ship of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Named after the Dutch cartographer Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598), today she operates as an expedition ship with 53 cabins in the waters of the Arctic and Antarctic. It has the highest ice class (1A) and is perfect for trips into pack ice. She is 91 m long, has a draft of 5.8 m and cruises a maximum of 13 knots. Due to its small size and maneuverability, it also reaches narrow fjords and bays that are not accessible to large cruise ships.
